Mega Evolution (ME01): Top 5 Chase Cards

Released on September 26, 2025, the Mega Evolution base set launched an entirely new era for the Pokemon TCG — one defined by returning Mega Evolution mechanics, three-Prize legendary Pokemon, and the most punishing pull rates the modern game has ever seen.

The set introduced a brand new ultra-rare tier: the Mega Hyper Rare (MHR) — gold etched cards pulling at approximately 1 in 1,260 packs. That's roughly 3–4 times harder than a standard Hyper Rare from the Scarlet & Violet era, and statistically speaking, you'd expect to open around 70 booster boxes before pulling a specific MHR. These are genuinely rare cards in a way the hobby hasn't seen since the vintage era.

Here are the five cards — ranked by current secondary market value — that collectors are chasing hardest in the Mega Evolution base set.

1. Mega Lucario ex — Mega Hyper Rare (~$700–770)

Lucario is one of the most beloved Pokemon in the franchise — a Fighting/Steel-type from Generation 4 with a design that resonates across game players, anime fans, and collectors. Its Mega Hyper Rare in the base set is the defining pull of the entire launch set, featuring the gold etched treatment on the new MHR card stock.

At approximately 1 in 2,520 packs for this specific card (accounting for multiple MHRs sharing the same slot), pulling a Mega Lucario ex MHR from a booster pack would be considered a lottery-level event. The secondary market reflects that scarcity.

2. Mega Gardevoir ex — Mega Hyper Rare (~$500–600)

Gardevoir's popularity needs no introduction — it's been one of the most collected Pokemon in the TCG for years, and its MHR in the Mega Evolution base set commands extraordinary prices for the same reason as Lucario ex: near-impossible pull odds combined with massive dedicated collector demand.

Completing the MHR suite in this set means obtaining both Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex. For many collectors, these two cards define the pinnacle of the set.

3. Mega Gardevoir ex — Special Illustration Rare (~$175)

The SIR version of Mega Gardevoir ex is a more attainable (though still rare) alternative to the MHR, featuring the same Pokemon in a full-art illustration rather than the gold etched treatment. SIRs in the Mega Evolution era pull at approximately 3x lower odds than in the Scarlet & Violet era, meaning these are meaningfully harder pulls than collectors were accustomed to.

At ~$175, Mega Gardevoir ex SIR sits firmly in high-value territory even without the MHR premium.

4. Mega Lucario ex — Special Illustration Rare (~$160)

The SIR counterpart to the Mega Lucario ex MHR mirrors the Gardevoir situation — a beautiful full-art illustration of Lucario in Mega form that's significantly more accessible than the gold version but still expensive by any standard. Collectors building toward a complete set of Lucario Mega Evolution cards will want both the SIR and the MHR.

5. Lt. Surge's Bargain — Special Illustration Rare (~$38)

Trainer SIRs have been consistent high performers throughout the modern Pokemon TCG era, and Lt. Surge's Bargain continues that tradition. Lt. Surge is one of the most iconic Gym Leaders from the original games and anime, and seeing him in a new SIR artwork generated immediate collector interest. Fan-favourite character cards with quality artwork hold value reliably.

Understanding the Mega Hyper Rare Pull Rate

The MHR tier changed the conversation around Pokemon TCG collecting when it launched. To contextualise: a standard booster box (36 packs) has roughly a 1 in 35 chance of containing any MHR. To pull a specific MHR, you're looking at odds that make single purchasing the only realistic strategy for most collectors.

This has pushed MHR prices into territory previously occupied only by vintage cards and graded modern rarities. If you're hunting these, budget accordingly — and consider tracking your collection progress carefully to know exactly where you stand.
