Ascended Heroes: Top 5 Chase Cards

Released on January 30, 2026, Mega Evolution — Ascended Heroes is the special "High Class Pack" of the Mega Evolution era — a premium release equivalent to Japan's MEGA Dream ex set. With 290+ cards across multiple product waves (January 30, February 20, and March 20), it's the largest set in the Mega Evolution series to date and features 13 Mega Evolution Pokemon ex.

As a High Class Pack equivalent, Ascended Heroes has a higher concentration of rare cards per pack and a premium price point to match. The result is a set with some of the highest individual card values in the modern game — including one card that has established itself as the most expensive in the entire Mega Evolution era.

Here are the five cards — ranked by current secondary market value — that define the chase in Ascended Heroes.

1. Mega Gengar ex — Special Illustration Rare (~$960)

Mega Gengar ex SIR is the most expensive card in the Mega Evolution era so far, and one of the most valuable modern Pokemon cards currently on the secondary market. Gengar is one of the most popular Pokemon in franchise history — consistently ranking in the top 3 in official global popularity polls — and the Mega Evolution treatment gives it a visual scale that the original Ghost-type never had.

The SIR artwork delivers something that Gengar fans have wanted for years: the Pokemon rendered with genuine menace and grandeur in a full-art composition that uses the expanded SIR canvas to full effect. Combined with the High Class Pack's tighter pull rates, this card is both rare and intensely wanted — the exact combination that produces record prices.

2. Mega Charizard Y ex — Mega Hyper Rare (~$666)

Where Phantasmal Flames gave us Mega Charizard X, Ascended Heroes delivers the counterpart — Mega Charizard Y ex in Mega Hyper Rare (gold) form. Charizard Y is the Fire/Flying variant from the XY era with its signature super-powered fire breath, and the MHR treatment at near-impossible pull odds creates predictable results: enormous secondary market prices.

Two Mega Charizard cards in two consecutive sets (one X, one Y) is a deliberate collector strategy — and it worked exactly as intended, with both generating major market activity at launch and beyond.

3. Mega Dragonite ex — Hyper Rare (~$549)

One of the most striking cards in Ascended Heroes is the Mega Dragonite ex Hyper Rare — not an MHR, but a standard Hyper Rare (gold treatment) that commands an exceptional price. Dragonite is a Gen 1 powerhouse with deep nostalgic roots, and its Mega Evolution form in Ascended Heroes is inspired by the Legends: Z-A storyline, adding a layer of narrative context that elevates the card beyond a simple reprint.

At ~$549, the Mega Dragonite ex HR is extraordinary for a non-MHR card — a reflection of both Dragonite's popularity and the High Class Pack's enhanced rarity profile.

4. Mega Feraligatr ex — Special Illustration Rare (~$217)

Feraligatr is the Water-type starter of Johto — a Pokemon with a passionate Generation 2 fanbase that has never quite been as well-served by the TCG as its Kanto counterparts. The Mega Feraligatr ex SIR in Ascended Heroes is one of the most significant cards the Pokemon has ever received, and the Gen 2 collector community responded accordingly. For long-time fans who grew up with Gold and Silver, this card carries real weight.

5. Mega Diancie ex — Special Illustration Rare (~$164)

Diancie is a Mythical Pokemon — the Rock/Fairy-type introduced in X and Y — with an elegant, crystalline design that translates beautifully to the SIR format. The Mega Diancie ex SIR in Ascended Heroes is the first major card treatment the Pokemon has received in the Mega Evolution era, and Mythical Pokemon collector demand is reliably strong for debut appearances.

What Is a High Class Pack?

Ascended Heroes functions as the Mega Evolution era's equivalent of the Japanese High Class Packs — premium sets like VMAX Climax or Crown Zenith that consolidate rare cards from the era into one release with better pull rates per pack (and a higher retail price to compensate).

The practical effect is that Ascended Heroes packs are both more expensive and more rewarding than standard set packs. The concentration of SIRs, MHRs, and Hyper Rares per box is significantly higher, making it one of the more satisfying sets to open in the era — if your budget allows for the premium.

With 290+ cards across multiple waves, completing Ascended Heroes is a serious collector challenge. Tracking exactly which cards you own — and which you still need — is the most efficient way to approach a set this large.
